Digital & Automatic Levels

Digital and automatic levels are used for surveying, construction, civil engineering and site measurement where accurate height differences, elevations or level references need to be established. The right instrument depends on the type of work being carried out and whether the job requires optical staff readings, electronic measurement or a direct level and slope check.

Celtic Surveys supplies surveying levels for different types of field and site work, together with levelling staffs, tripods and survey books used as part of the wider setup.

Surveying Levels for Construction and Site Work

Surveying levels are commonly used for transferring elevations, checking site levels and establishing height differences across construction and engineering projects. Applications can include foundations, drainage, road formation, floors, earthworks, landscaping and general setting out.

Tripod-mounted instruments are used with a levelling staff to compare readings from a stable reference point. Handheld digital levels work differently, providing local level, slope or angle readings directly from the surface on which they are placed.

Choosing the right equipment starts with the type of measurement required rather than the display or instrument style alone.

Automatic and Dumpy Levels

Automatic levels are optical surveying instruments used with a levelling staff for height and elevation work.

Once the instrument has been approximately levelled, its internal compensator maintains the horizontal line of sight within the operating range specified for the instrument. The user then takes staff readings at selected points to calculate or transfer elevations.

Automatic levels can be used for tasks such as construction setting out, groundworks, drainage levels, foundations and general site levelling.

When comparing instruments, consider factors such as magnification, stated accuracy, focusing distance and the working conditions in which the level will be used.

Digital Survey Levels

Digital survey levels are also used for elevation and staff-based measurement, but they add electronic reading functions to the levelling process.

Depending on the instrument, a digital level may read a compatible coded staff electronically and support functions such as calculating height differences, storing observations or transferring data.

These instruments are useful where electronic readings or recorded survey data are required as part of the workflow.

The available features vary between models, so staff compatibility, accuracy, data functions and measurement range should be checked before choosing an instrument.

See our Digital Survey Levels for dedicated surveying instruments with electronic measurement functions.

Hand Digital Levels

Hand Digital Levels are used for a different type of measurement.

Rather than transferring elevations between points using a tripod and staff, these instruments are placed directly against a surface or component. Depending on the model, they can display level, angle, slope or inclination.

They can be useful for work involving machinery, fabrication, pipework, fit-out and other applications where a direct local measurement is required.

Because hand digital levels and surveying levels work in different ways, the correct type should be selected according to the measurement needed.

Levelling Staffs, Tripods and Survey Records

Tripod-mounted levels need suitable support and a compatible levelling staff to carry out field measurements.

A stable tripod provides the mounting point for the instrument, while the levelling staff provides the reference used for height readings. The tripod, instrument and staff should all suit the type of survey work and site conditions.

Our Tripods include support options for mounted survey instruments.

For recording field observations, measurements and calculations, Level & Survey Books provide a practical way to keep site notes organised during levelling work.

When building a surveying setup, check instrument mounting, staff type, tripod compatibility and the measurement method required before selecting the individual components.
