Each placement must still relate correctly to the intended line and reference points.

Traditional chain survey equipment may support baseline and offset work as part of an appropriate surveying method. The chain itself does not establish survey control, horizontal coordinates, height, ownership, or the legal position of a boundary. It also cannot confirm that the selected endpoints represent the required project references. These matters depend on suitable control, records, measurements, and professional assessment.

What Can a Land Chain Measure?

A land measuring chain can record accessible field lengths, construction lines, site references, forestry intervals, agricultural spacing, and distances across open ground. Subject to its stated length and markings, it may also support repeated equal intervals between defined points. Both endpoints and the route between them must be accessible. The result is a direct occupied distance and does not independently calculate area, volume, gradient, or elevation.

Dirty links, worn joints, damaged handles, unclear markers, and previous impact can change effective length or make intervals difficult to identify. Metal components may also respond to temperature, while applied tension and support can influence the occupied measurement.

A damaged or stretched chain may no longer represent its intended length, even when the markers remain readable. Cleaning, inspection, storage, and any required accuracy checks should follow the applicable working method without assuming that outdoor construction makes the equipment unaffected by wear.
