Moisture Measurement

Moisture meters are used to check moisture levels in timber, walls, masonry, concrete and other building materials. They can support building inspections, maintenance work, condition surveys and material checks where a measured reading is more useful than relying on visible signs alone.

Celtic Surveys supplies moisture meters for different materials and measurement methods, including pin-type and non-invasive instruments. The right meter depends on the surface being checked, the measurement depth required and whether the work calls for direct contact or scanning.

Moisture Meters for Building and Material Checks

A moisture meter gives a reading from a selected material or area so that conditions can be recorded and compared.

Different materials may require different measuring methods. Timber, plaster, concrete and masonry do not all respond in the same way, so it is important to choose an instrument designed for the material being checked.

The range includes moisture meters for walls and building materials, timber moisture meters, concrete moisture meters and equipment for broader building-condition checks.

A moisture reading can help document conditions at the time of inspection, but it does not by itself identify the source or cause of moisture.

Pin-Type and Non-Invasive Moisture Meters

Moisture meters generally use either a pin-type or non-invasive measurement method.

A pin-type moisture meter uses pins, probes or electrodes that make contact with the material. Depending on the instrument, this can provide readings from timber, plaster, masonry or other suitable materials.

A non-invasive moisture meter scans the material without inserting pins into the surface. These instruments can be useful where surface damage needs to be avoided or where larger areas need to be checked quickly.

Some moisture meters combine both methods, allowing the user to switch between pin and non-invasive measurements depending on the task.

Neither method is automatically better for every situation. The correct choice depends on the material, the required measurement approach and the specifications of the individual instrument.

Moisture Meters for Walls, Timber and Concrete

Different moisture meters are designed for different materials and measurement methods.

A moisture meter for walls can be used during building inspections to check selected areas of plaster, masonry and other compatible surfaces. These readings can help identify areas that need further checking or allow changes to be compared over time.

A timber moisture meter is used to measure moisture in wood and can support work during construction, maintenance, flooring and timber assessment.

Concrete moisture meters use methods designed specifically for concrete and related materials. Because concrete behaves differently from timber or plaster, the correct instrument and measurement method should be selected for the job.

For a fuller picture of site conditions, moisture readings may also be considered alongside humidity and temperature, particularly where environmental conditions could affect the inspection.

Always check the stated material range and measurement method before using one meter across different surfaces.

Choosing the Right Moisture Meter

Start with the material you need to check and the type of measurement required.

Consider:

  • The material being measured
  • Pin-type or non-invasive measurement
  • Required measuring range
  • Measurement depth
  • Probe or electrode compatibility
  • Display and recording requirements
  • Whether repeat readings will be needed
  • Working conditions on site

Some instruments are designed for one particular material, while others support several measurement modes. The product information should make clear which materials and methods each meter is intended for.

If the issue is less about measuring moisture within the material and more about locating a suspected leak, our Water Leak Detection equipment is intended for that type of work.
