Inspection instruments help professionals examine areas that are difficult to reach or cannot be viewed directly. They may provide a direct view, reflected view, camera image or visible indication of airflow and leakage paths. These tools are used in building services, maintenance, chimney work and drainage inspection.

At Celtic Surveys, our inspection equipment includes products within the Wohler Inspection Instruments range. The correct choice depends on the target, access opening, route length, bends, lighting and whether a live view or stored images are required.

No single instrument suits every pipe, flue, duct or cavity. Selection should follow the physical route and inspection purpose rather than camera size or cable length alone.

Why Use Professional Inspection Instruments?

Professional inspection instruments allow technicians to view internal surfaces, obstructions, deposits and damage without immediately dismantling equipment or opening a structure. This can support maintenance planning, cleaning decisions, follow-up testing and repair work.

The value of the inspection depends on access, lighting, image clarity, surface condition and operator control. Dirt, condensation, reflective materials and restricted movement can obscure details. A camera image or reflected view records visible conditions, while the cause or seriousness of an issue may require further testing or physical access.

Different instruments solve different access problems. A push-rod camera can travel through a longer enclosed route, while a compact borescope suits a nearby cavity or small opening. Mirrors provide a reflected view where the target is close, and smoke can make air movement easier to observe.

What Can Inspection Instruments Help You Examine?

Longer-reach camera systems use a camera head connected to a push rod or cable, with images shown on an integrated screen or monitor. They may be used in suitable drains, pipes, flues and concealed building spaces.

Our Visual Inspection range includes camera systems with different cable lengths, head diameters and display arrangements. Depending on the model, functions may include image capture, video recording, pan-and-tilt movement, distance counting, orientation control or compatibility with locating equipment.

Compact video endoscopes and borescopes are designed for closer inspection through restricted openings. They may be used to view cavities, components, machinery, voids and short internal routes where a smaller probe is appropriate. Probe diameter, working length, flexibility, articulation, viewing direction and lighting vary between models.

The Endoscopes range covers these compact probe-based tools. They are not direct replacements for longer push-rod systems because smaller probes may lack the reach, rigidity or cable control needed for extended pipes, drains or chimney routes.

Manual visual inspection tools remain useful where the target is close, and lighting is available. Handheld, chimney and telescopic mirrors can provide reflected views around corners or behind components. Smoke or fog products help show airflow direction, draught movement or possible leakage paths.

The Mirrors / Dew Plates / Smoke range includes these options. Each provides a different visual result and should be selected according to the condition being checked.

How Do Visual Inspection Methods Differ?

Push-rod and cable camera systems are suited to longer enclosed routes. Compact borescopes and endoscopes are better for shorter access through smaller openings. Mirrors work where a reflected line of sight is possible, while smoke and fog reveal movement rather than internal surface condition.

Route dimensions influence selection. The opening must accommodate the camera head or probe, while bends, branches, deposits and changes in diameter may restrict movement. A long cable offers little benefit if the head cannot pass through the route or be controlled near the target.

Remote visual inspection equipment also differs in steering, lighting and image handling. A fixed-forward camera shows what is directly ahead, while an articulated or pan-and-tilt head may provide a broader view. Orientation functions can make images easier to interpret, but these features vary by system.

Locating equipment may help identify the position of a compatible camera head from outside a structure. The camera, transmitter and locator must be designed to work together. Smoke products indicate movement visually but do not measure airflow rate or leakage volume.

How to Choose Inspection Instruments for the Work

Begin with the target and access route. Record the opening size, expected distance, bends, branches, internal condition and available lighting. Decide whether the work requires a live view, still images, video, location data or a basic visual check.

Compare camera-head or probe diameter, working length, flexibility, steering, focus range, lighting and environmental protection. Cable handling, image storage, battery life, portability and compatible accessories may also affect use.

The smallest head or longest cable is not automatically the best option. Passage through the route, control near the target and the quality of the view are more important than a single specification.
