Equipment must therefore match the parameter, sample material and project requirement.

Readings support process control, fault-finding and consistent records. They do not confirm that a substrate is ready for coating, which also depends on the required cleanliness, surface profile, atmospheric conditions and acceptance procedure.

Why Use Abrasive and Blast Inspection Equipment?

Blast-hose pressure indicates how the air supply is performing near the working end of the system. A pressure drop affects production rate, abrasive consumption and the resulting profile. Comparisons under defined operating conditions reveal restrictions, losses or changes in the system.

Nozzle wear creates another source of variation. As the orifice enlarges, air demand and abrasive consumption rise, while available pressure and blasting consistency may change. Size checks establish when wear exceeds the limit adopted for the set-up. Pressure and nozzle gauges answer related but different questions.

Abrasive media and water may transfer soluble ionic contamination during preparation. Recycled material can accumulate contaminants through repeated use. Appearance does not reveal the concentration, so defined tests give the specification a measurable basis for comparison. A total conductivity result and a chloride-specific result cannot be interpreted as the same measurement.

What Can Be Checked During Abrasive Blasting?

The Elcometer 102 Needle Pressure Gauge measures air pressure in blast and air hoses. Its hypodermic needle accesses the hose interior, so the reading depends on position, operating condition and safe handling. It does not measure nozzle diameter. The Elcometer 103 Blast Nozzle Gauge measures orifices from 6.4 to 16 mm for comparison with the original size.

Soluble ionic contamination requires a material test rather than either gauge. Under ASTM D4940, a measured abrasive sample is mixed with an equal volume of water. After agitation, settling and filtration, conductivity represents the water-soluble conductive species present. The Elcometer 138 Abrasive Soluble Salt Test Kit contains the required conductivity meter and test equipment.

This is not a Bresle patch test and does not measure salts remaining on the blasted substrate. Conductivity reflects total water-soluble ionic contamination rather than a particular ion. For chloride-specific testing, the Elcometer 134A assesses abrasive media, while the Elcometer 134W assesses wash water, blast water and compatible recycled water.

The 134A and 134W have different ranges and contents because their sample materials differ. Their titration tubes produce a chloride reading, while the Elcometer 138 reports conductivity. Results remain tied to the sampling method, test conditions, consumables and specified acceptance limit.

Where Is Abrasive Blast Inspection Equipment Used?

Abrasive blast inspection equipment is used during preparation of structural steel, tanks, pipelines, bridges, marine assets, plant and fabricated components. Pressure and nozzle checks apply during operation or planned condition checks. Abrasive and water tests apply before use, after recycling or at specified intervals.

These measurements sit alongside other coating checks. Surface Cleanliness equipment assesses contamination on the prepared substrate rather than within abrasive media or water. Surface Profile instruments measure prepared texture, while Climate, Dewpoint & Relative Humidity instruments assess atmospheric conditions. Each result relates to a separate acceptance requirement.

Sampling frequency depends on the specification, material source, recycling arrangement and expected variation. One abrasive or water sample does not describe all material subsequently used. A pressure or nozzle reading likewise represents the configuration and conditions at that time.

What Influences Abrasive and Blast Inspection Results?

Pressure readings depend on position, hose condition, airflow, compressor output, nozzle size and consistent operation. Nozzle measurements depend on gauge placement, a clean orifice and freedom from damage that prevents a representative fit. Consistent positions and operating conditions support meaningful comparisons.

Contamination testing depends on representative sampling and controlled quantities. Water purity, sample volume, agitation, settling, filtration and clean containers influence conductivity. Chloride tests rely on compatible preparation, intact titration tubes and correctly stored reagents. Cross-contamination may alter a low-level result.

Needles, chemical materials and used components require handling, storage and disposal under the supplied instructions and site controls. Instrument condition, verification status, batch reference, sampling point and result complete the record where required. No isolated reading replaces the current specification and acceptance criteria.
