Surface Roughness

A surface roughness tester quantifies small vertical variations along a surface. A contact stylus travels across a defined length and records its vertical movement, from which nominated roughness parameters are calculated. The result represents that sampled line and its measurement settings, not every part of the component or prepared area.

Within our Coatings Inspection equipment, this method supports checks against drawings, test methods, or project specifications. The selected parameter, settings, stylus arrangement, and applicable standard determine the result. Changing the position, trace direction or settings may change the value.

Why Use a Surface Roughness Tester?

Sight and touch show that surfaces differ, but neither produces a defined numerical roughness value. A surface roughness tester records texture under defined settings for comparison with a documented requirement or matched earlier readings.

Surface texture may influence friction, wear, sealing, lubricant retention, appearance or the behaviour of a subsequent finish, depending on the application. One reading does not guarantee coating adhesion, service life or component performance. The relevant characteristic and acceptable value must come from the drawing, specification or test method.

Interpretation depends on the parameter, project requirement, procedure and acceptance criteria; a number alone does not approve a component or prepared surface. Stylus-tracing surface roughness measurement also differs from Surface Profile checks. Profile gauges assess local depth directly, while replica tape reproduces a local impression for separate assessment. Neither method is interchangeable with a calculated stylus trace.

What Can Surface Roughness Equipment Measure?

The drive unit mechanically draws the stylus across a predefined sampling or traversing length. Vertical movement is processed using selected filter, cut-off, and evaluation settings. The Elcometer 7062 MarSurf PS10 has 31 model-specific surface-parameter settings, so the required output must be selected rather than inferred.

Ra expresses the arithmetic mean of the absolute profile deviations from the mean line over the sampling length and is described as average roughness. It does not reveal every peak or valley. Rz describes a peak-to-valley characteristic, although its precise definition depends on the nominated standard. Rt is the total distance between the highest peak and lowest valley across the evaluation length.

Rmax concerns the largest individual peak-to-valley difference within the applicable evaluation arrangement. Peak-count or spacing parameters are available where specified. Ra, Rz, Rt and Rmax describe different parts of the trace and are not interchangeable. Filters, cut-off length, sampling length, evaluation length and the measurement standard affect results, so values obtained under different settings should not be compared automatically.

Where Is Surface Roughness Measurement Used?

Suitable protective-coating and industrial applications include machined components, fabricated metalwork, shafts, rollers, sealing surfaces and production checks. Portable measurement suits large samples that cannot be taken to a laboratory, provided the drive unit and stylus seat correctly.

A portable surface roughness tester supports different orientations where stable placement and correct stylus travel are possible. The Elcometer 7062 drive unit separates from the main unit and uses the supplied extension cable in restricted-access locations. Optional pickups suit specified bores, grooves, concave or convex surfaces, tooth flanks, metal sheets and rollers; they are selected separately and are not all included as standard.

A roughness result does not replace other preparation checks. Surface Condition equipment addresses visible or dimensional characteristics, while Surface Cleanliness equipment assesses contaminants such as dust or soluble salts. Neither is identified by a stylus roughness trace.

How to Choose Surface Roughness Equipment

Selection starts with the required parameter, applicable standard, and expected measurement range. Range and resolution must suit the expected texture, while supported parameters must match the reporting requirement. Stylus-tip geometry and measuring force also matter because the pickup physically follows the surface.

Surface geometry and access determine whether the standard pickup, an optional pickup, an extension or a measuring stand is appropriate. Sampling, traversing and evaluation lengths must suit the method, with the specified cut-off and filter available. A surface roughness meter should meet the required metric or imperial reporting, memory, data-transfer and record needs. Supplied and optional accessories, calibration and verification arrangements also require review.

Trace direction relative to the predominant surface lay affects the value. Stylus wear, dirt, oil, vibration, unstable placement, curvature and restricted access may alter the trace or prevent correct seating. These factors should be controlled through the instrument instructions and stated procedure, not universal settings.

The Elcometer 7062 has an integrated roughness standard for routine checks and is supplied with a calibration certificate. Later verification or calibration may still be required by the quality system, project method or instrument condition.
