A steel tape measure uses a graduated steel blade to measure direct linear distances between two reference points. It is used for construction, setting-out, groundworks, building measurement and selected surveying tasks where the measurement line is accessible.

A steel tape provides a direct reading of the distance covered by the blade. It can check lengths, widths, baselines, offsets, foundations, formwork and other site dimensions. The user positions the zero reference at one point and reads the measurement at the other.
A long steel tape measure can cover extended distances with fewer repeated placements than a shorter tape. This can reduce the number of intermediate marks required, although the result still depends on correct positioning and handling.
The blade should follow the line being measured. A tape laid over uneven ground, around an obstruction or along a slope records that path, which may differ from the required straight-line or horizontal distance.

The tape records linear distance only. It may contribute to surveying or setting-out work, but it does not independently establish coordinates, elevations, legal boundaries or survey control. Those tasks require suitable survey procedures and additional instruments where necessary.
When a distance exceeds the blade length, it can be divided into sections. Each section must be marked and recorded carefully because errors at intermediate points can affect the total.
A standard steel tape may record an object’s circumference, but it does not provide the diameter directly unless graduated for that purpose. Diameter Tapes use specialised graduations that convert circumference into a diameter reading.
Accuracy depends on the zero reference, alignment, support, tension, temperature and blade condition.
For ordinary building and site checks, careful positioning may be sufficient for the required tolerance. Higher-accuracy work may require controlled tension, full blade support and consideration of temperature. Steel expands slightly as temperature rises and contracts as it falls. A long unsupported blade may sag, while excessive pulling force can stretch it temporarily.
Check the blade and end fittings before use. Kinks, corrosion, worn graduations or a loose hook or ring can affect the zero point and make alignment more difficult. Remove dirt and moisture before rewinding and storage.
Steel tapes are used in building construction, civil engineering, groundworks, site development, fabrication, installation and maintenance. They may also support distance checks in forestry, agriculture, landscaping and property measurement where the endpoints and path are accessible.
A steel tape for surveying is useful when the blade can be placed along the required line. It may be less suitable where obstacles, dense vegetation, traffic, steep ground or inaccessible endpoints prevent direct placement.
Fibre Glass Tapes offer an alternative for some field applications and respond differently to moisture, abrasion, tension, temperature and repeated handling. The appropriate choice depends on the required distance, environment and accuracy.
Different tools suit different site conditions. Short Tapes are convenient for compact building, component and fit-out measurements, and many use retractable steel blades.
Measuring Wheels record distance by rolling over the ground surface. They suit route measurements and approximate site distances, but the result follows the travelled surface rather than a straight suspended line.
Laser Distance Measurers use a laser to measure the distance to a suitable target surface. They can be useful where there is a clear line of sight but limited physical access between the points.
These tools are not direct substitutes in every situation. Selection should reflect the required distance, access, surface conditions, reference points and acceptable tolerance.
Choose a tape that matches the expected distance, unit system, graduation spacing, stated accuracy, blade width, end fitting and working environment. Options may include metric, imperial or dual graduations, open or enclosed reels, and manual or geared rewind.
Hooks, rings and loops provide different starting-point arrangements. The zero position may vary according to the end fitting, so it should be checked before work begins.
Some blades include lacquer, nylon or another protective layer to help reduce wear and corrosion. Protection varies by product and does not remove the need for cleaning, drying and suitable storage.
Steel is electrically conductive. Do not use a steel tape where it could contact live conductors or exposed electrical equipment. A coated blade must not be assumed to provide electrical insulation.
