Cable Height Meters

A handheld ultrasonic instrument measures the distance from a defined ground position to a suitable overhead cable or wire without physical contact. The result normally represents vertical or near-vertical clearance at that selected point, subject to correct alignment, a suitable target response and the stated measuring range. Professionals can therefore record selected overhead clearances from ground level while observing all site controls.

An ultrasonic cable height meter may vary by range, display, unit options, temperature compensation, supported cable count and recording functions. Metric and imperial units, memory and audible indication are available only where included in the specification. These instruments complement our Distance Measurement / Monitoring equipment for recording selected clearances and dimensions, helping us match available functions to the intended application.

Why Use a Cable Height Meter for Overhead Clearance Checks?

Utilities, road operators, contractors, land managers and facilities teams may need clearance information when planning access or documenting existing conditions. Readings can support work around roads, construction areas, farm entrances, forestry routes and utility corridors. They may also help compare a selected vertical clearance with the stated dimensions of vehicles, machinery or access equipment.

Remote measurement avoids touching the target, but it does not remove electrical hazards. Applicable exclusion zones and site procedures still apply. Utility-owner requirements remain relevant, and the instrument does not determine whether a line is live, authorise work near an overhead line or make an approach safe.

A height indication cannot identify voltage, cable ownership or conductor condition. It does not confirm legal compliance, statutory clearance or whether a proposed activity is suitable. Those decisions require current utility information, site controls and competent assessment. The value remains one item of clearance information from a defined position.

What Does an Ultrasonic Cable Height Meter Measure?

Ultrasonic pulses are directed towards a suitable overhead target. Where a suitable ultrasonic return is available, the returning signal supports a distance calculation between the instrument and target. The indicated result normally relates to vertical or near-vertical clearance from the selected reference position under appropriate site and environmental conditions.

A digital cable height meter presents the value on an electronic display and may offer unit selection, temperature compensation, memory or recording functions,, depending on the selected instrument. Where supported, it may indicate multiple cable returns. Nearby wires, branches, structures and other objects can affect the signal, so the reading may not identify which specific cable produced it.

One reading describes cable height at a selected point. Cable sag, horizontal span length and the complete overhead line profile are separate measurements. A single value does not automatically establish the lowest point of the span. Determining change along a line requires suitable positioning and professional judgement beyond one indicated distance.

Where Is Cable Height Measurement Used?

Cable height measurement is used around electricity-distribution cables, telecommunications wires, utility routes, roads, construction sites, farm access points, forestry work areas and managed facilities. It can provide preliminary records for a named position, inform access planning for vehicles or machinery, and support maintenance files where readings use a consistent reference.

Repeated cable height measurement may help record change at the same location when the reference position, equipment and surrounding conditions are suitable and documented. Results can support early planning, but a recorded height alone does not confirm that a vehicle, machine or work activity may proceed safely. Current site procedures and utility-owner requirements remain decisive.

Where work also requires the position of compatible buried services, Cable & Pipe Location equipment supports that separate task. It must not be treated as a substitute for overhead clearance measurement.

How to Choose a Cable Height Meter for the Work

Selection starts with the stated measuring range and minimum measurable height. Measurement resolution, display size and metric or imperial units affect how values are read and recorded. Depending on the instrument, other specification points include the number of cables indicated, temperature compensation, audible indication and memory or data functions.

Battery arrangement, environmental protection, portability and carrying arrangements also affect field suitability. A digital cable height meter should match the expected clearance, number of overhead targets, environmental conditions, display requirements and record format. No instrument suits every target, distance or site condition, and conductors should not be assumed to produce identical signal responses.

Performance may be influenced by alignment, ground slope, uneven ground, the reference position, cable angle, cable movement, wind, temperature, air conditions, rain, mist and moisture. Target size, material, distance, background ultrasonic noise and obstructions also matter. Branches, structures or adjacent wires may create competing returns, so equipment suitability must be judged against the intended work.

Order a Cable Height Meter from Celtic Surveys

Celtic Surveys supplies ultrasonic equipment for selected overhead cable and wire clearance applications. We can help match measuring range, display, supported cable count, temperature compensation and environmental suitability to the intended work. Data requirements and carrying arrangements should also be checked against expected site conditions before selection.
