Fibre Glass Tapes

A fibreglass tape measure uses a flexible graduated tape reinforced with glass fibres to measure direct distances between accessible reference points. It is commonly used for construction, setting-out, groundworks, site checks and selected land-measurement tasks.

Within our Measuring Tapes range, fibreglass tapes are available in different lengths, graduation systems and reel designs. Open reel tapes are commonly used for longer measurements because the exposed frame allows the tape to be rewound and handled efficiently.

Accurate readings depend on clear endpoints, correct alignment, suitable support, consistent tension and the condition of the tape. The tape must also be positioned along the line that needs to be measured.

Why Use a Fibreglass Tape Measure for Direct Measurement?

A fibreglass tape measure provides a practical way to measure lengths, widths, baselines, offsets and reference distances across accessible areas. Its flexibility can make it suitable for construction sites, outdoor environments and fieldwork where a rigid measuring tool would be inconvenient.

A surveyor’s tape measure can support distance checks during surveying and setting-out work. However, the tape records only the distance physically covered between the selected points. It does not independently establish coordinates, elevations, survey control or legal boundaries.

The position of the tape must match the required measurement. A tape following uneven ground, a slope or an obstruction records the occupied path rather than a level horizontal distance. Over longer spans, poor alignment, twisting, sag or inconsistent pulling force can affect the reading.

Fibreglass tapes and Steel Tapes respond differently to handling and site conditions. Fibreglass tapes are generally more flexible and do not corrode like an unprotected steel blade. Steel tapes are typically stiffer and may be preferred where a metal blade and particular accuracy specification are required. Neither material is automatically suitable for every task.

What Can Be Measured with a Fibreglass Tape Measure?

A fibreglass tape measure can support measurements such as:

  • Building lengths and widths
  • Construction lines and baselines
  • Offsets between reference points
  • Foundation and formwork dimensions
  • Site and field distances
  • Installation and maintenance checks
  • Selected forestry and agricultural measurements

Both endpoints and the route between them should be accessible. When the required distance exceeds the tape length, the measurement may be divided into sections. Each intermediate point must be marked and recorded carefully because positioning errors can affect the total.

Tape condition also influences reliability. Fraying, folds, worn graduations, damaged coatings or loose end fittings may make it difficult to establish an accurate starting point or maintain correct alignment.

A standard fibreglass tape can measure circumference, but it does not provide a direct diameter reading unless it has the appropriate graduations. Diameter Tapes are specifically graduated to convert circumference into diameter.

A length measurement also does not independently determine area, volume, gradient, elevation, coordinates or boundary ownership. These results require additional measurements, calculations or surveying procedures.

Where Are Fibre Glass Tapes Used?

Fibreglass tapes are used in construction, civil engineering, groundworks, site development, setting-out support and property measurement. They may also be used for accessible distances in forestry, agriculture, landscaping, installation and maintenance.

A land survey tape measure can assist with field-distance observations where the measurement points are clearly defined. It may form part of a wider surveying process, but it does not replace survey control, coordinate measurement or boundary verification.

Fibreglass tapes may use an open or enclosed reel. An open reel fibreglass tape measure carries the wound tape within an exposed frame, making the tape easy to inspect and clean. An enclosed reel stores more of the tape inside a protective case. The reel design affects handling, storage and rewind but does not determine accuracy by itself.

For shorter building, component and fit-out measurements, Short Tapes provide more compact handling. Many are retractable and designed for frequent measurements over shorter distances.

Measuring Wheels record distance by rolling along a surface. They are useful for ground routes and approximate site distances, but they measure the path followed by the wheel rather than a suspended straight line.

Laser Distance Measurers measure the distance to a suitable target surface without placing a tape along the full span. They can be useful where there is a clear line of sight but limited access between the measurement points.

How to Choose a Fibreglass Tape Measure for the Work

Choose a fibreglass tape measure according to the expected distance, unit system, graduation spacing, stated accuracy and working environment. Tape width, reinforcement, end fitting and reel design should also suit the intended application.

Available options may include metric, imperial or dual graduations, single-sided or double-sided markings, open or enclosed reels, and manual or geared rewind. Hooks, rings and loops provide different ways to establish the starting point.

Check how the zero reference is arranged before use. The measurement may begin at the end of a ring, hook or other fitting, depending on the product design.

Some tapes include protective coatings intended to reduce wear, moisture penetration or damage from repeated handling. Performance varies by product. A protective coating should not be assumed to make every tape waterproof, weatherproof, tear-proof or resistant to dimensional change.

Fibreglass reinforcement also does not mean that the complete measuring tool is electrically safe. Metal hooks, reel components, axles or frame parts may still be present. Moisture and contamination can create further hazards. Work near live electrical conductors should only be carried out with equipment specifically verified for that application.

After use, remove dirt and moisture before rewinding the tape. Avoid sharp folding, excessive pulling force and storage in conditions that may cause abrasion, ultraviolet damage or deterioration.
