Adhesion testing assesses how securely a coating, applied material or repair layer remains attached to a compatible substrate. An adhesion tester provides information from a defined test area, supporting checks during coating application, quality control, repair assessment and planned maintenance. The selected method and reported result must suit the material system and the relevant test requirement.

Available methods include tensile pull-off testing and cross-hatch coating assessment. Instruments vary by test range, loading arrangement, dolly size, cutter spacing and recording functions, depending on the selected instrument. Why Use an Adhesion Tester for Coating and Bond Assessment?

Coating and bond information helps teams assess selected work during application, examine repair materials and document defined locations during maintenance. A recorded result gives a traceable reference for quality records, acceptance checks and comparison with stated criteria. It should be read with the method, test location, surface details and conditions present at the time. One position cannot represent an entire coated area.

Pull-off testing applies tensile force through a bonded test dolly until separation occurs or the specified test limit is reached. Cross-hatch testing assesses the amount and pattern of coating removal from a controlled lattice of cuts, with tape used where required by the applicable method. The first can provide a tensile value, while the second provides a visual classification of coating response. They assess coating attachment differently and are not directly interchangeable. Each result applies only to the tested location.

What Does an Adhesion Tester Measure?

A pull-off adhesion tester applies tensile load through a bonded dolly according to the selected test arrangement. Results may be displayed in MPa or N/mm², where supported and subject to the stated test range. The recorded value reflects the load at separation, or the specified limit reached, for that dolly geometry and test area. The number alone does not establish which part of the material system failed.

Separation can occur within the coating, between coating layers, at the coating-to-substrate bond, within the adhesive used to attach the dolly, at the adhesive-to-dolly interface or within the substrate itself. Records from a coating adhesion tester should therefore include the observed failure location alongside the numerical result. A value should not automatically be described as coating adhesion strength or bond strength when failure occurred away from the intended interface. Pull-off testing normally damages or removes material at the tested location.

Where Are Pull-Off and Cross-Hatch Methods Used?

Pull-off methods may be used on suitable protective coatings, painted metal, coated concrete, overlays, repair materials and other compatible surfaces. They may be selected where a tensile value is required, and the system can accept a bonded-dolly arrangement. Suitability depends on the coating, substrate, expected strength and applicable standard. Testing may stop at a stated limit rather than produce separation, depending on the method and instrument.

A cross-hatch cutter forms a controlled grid through a coating so the amount and pattern of removal can be assessed. Tape may be applied over the cut area where required by the applicable method. This assessment may suit selected coatings and thickness ranges, but it does not produce a tensile-strength value. Coating Thickness NDT can provide separate thickness information that supports method selection and interpretation; it does not determine adhesion. Profile Gauges can document surface texture linked to preparation, without predicting the final adhesion result.

How to Choose an Adhesion Tester for Your Work

Choosing suitable adhesion testing equipment starts with the required result form. Pull-off options differ in manual or automatic loading, test range, dolly diameter, loading arrangement, display, recording functions and portability. Some instruments support selected coating or concrete test arrangements, while others are intended for narrower applications. Confirm supplied accessories and available calibration documentation according to project requirements. No instrument should be assumed to support every material, range or dolly size.

For cross-hatch assessment, match cutter spacing, tooth count and cutter condition to the coating and stated method. The selected approach should also match coating type, thickness and layers, substrate strength, expected range, and required record. Interpretation should account for surface preparation and cleanliness, surface profile, dolly size and alignment, test adhesive and curing, cutting around the dolly, loading arrangement and rate, temperature, moisture, test location, number of test points and applicable standard. A cross-hatch classification and a pull-off tensile value are not interchangeable, and neither method is universally better.
