Wet Film Thickness

Wet film thickness is the thickness of a liquid coating between the substrate or previous coating and its exposed surface before drying or curing. A contact gauge checks the film shortly after application, while adjustment remains possible.

Within our Coatings Inspection equipment, comb and wheel gauges use different contact methods on recently applied coatings. Each reading applies to a local position, and contact disturbs the wet film there.

Why Measure Wet Film Thickness During Application?

An immediate wet film thickness reading supports adjustment during application and may reduce excessive material use, insufficient film build, and later corrective work. The required value must come from the coating manufacturer’s information, project specification or applicable test method. No universal target applies.

Applied thickness may influence eventual dry-film build, finish and coating behaviour, but a reading does not guarantee protection, adhesion, appearance or service life. Solvent evaporation, flow, setting and movement can change the film thickness, so timing matters. Interpret results with the coating type, application method, substrate condition and specified procedure.

Climate, Dewpoint & Relative Humidity equipment addresses environmental conditions before and during coating work. Surface Cleanliness equipment addresses dust, soluble salts and other contaminants. A wet-film reading replaces neither assessment.

What Can a Wet Film Thickness Gauge Measure?

On a wet film thickness comb, reference edges contact the substrate or underlying surface while graduated teeth extend to different depths. After contact, thickness lies between the highest-value wetted tooth and the next higher-value dry tooth. The available steps define an interval rather than a continuously resolved exact value.

A wheel gauge has two outer wheels resting on the substrate and a smaller eccentric centre wheel moving closer to it. The scale position where the centre wheel first contacts the coating indicates thickness. Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheels use a continuous scale across different ranges. Range, graduations and construction affect readability and resolution.

Where the coating manufacturer provides volume-solids data, a wet film thickness calculation may estimate the wet-film target corresponding to a specified dry-film thickness. Approved thinning changes the effective volume-solids proportion and must be included according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This estimate does not verify actual solids content or cured thickness and does not replace the appropriate Dry Film Thickness method after curing.

These gauges do not measure cured coating, uncured powder layers, substrate thickness, surface profile, adhesion, hardness, porosity, contamination, cure state, or coating composition. Their measurement principle is limited to compatible uncured liquid films.

Where Is Wet Film Thickness Measurement Used?

Wet-film checks suit protective-coating and industrial-finishing applications involving recently applied paint, varnish, lacquer, and other compatible liquid films on accessible surfaces. Examples include coated components and fabricated metalwork where thickness needs checking before drying or curing. Suitability depends on the coating and specified method.

Comb reference edges must seat correctly against the substrate or underlying surface. Geometry, roughness, access and stable contact affect suitability. Selected Elcometer 3230 wheels suit flat and curved surfaces, but not every range fits every curvature or location.

Gauge life and record needs also matter. Metal combs may be reusable or limited by their construction and condition. The ABS Elcometer 154 is designed for single use and may be retained as a record. Acceptance still depends on the applicable specification and procedure.

Both methods leave contact marks. Treatment of the measurement position must follow the coating procedure or project requirements.

How to Choose a Wet Film Gauge

Begin with the expected film thickness, specified method and applicable standard. Compare range, scale increments, stated accuracy, metric or imperial graduations, gauge material, surface shape, access, coating compatibility, reuse, record requirements and supplied or optional accessories. Together, they determine whether the wet film gauge suits the work.

The Elcometer 112AL is a punched aluminium comb supplied in packs of ten with metric and imperial scales. The Elcometer 154 is an ABS plastic comb with sixteen measurement steps, supplied in packs of 500 for single use and retention.

Elcometer 3230 wet-film wheels use a continuous scale, three-wheel arrangement and multiple ranges for selected flat and curved surfaces. Optional mounting handles are ordered separately. Select the required method and range rather than treating comb and wheel results as automatically interchangeable.

Dried residue, damaged edges, worn graduations, incorrect seating, uneven pressure, unsuitable range selection, delayed measurement and poor visibility can influence results. Cleaning and handling must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and suit the gauge material and coating. Where a standard is specified, confirm its current edition, accepted gauge geometry, measurement timing and reporting procedure.
