A well depth gauge provides portable measurement of the vertical distance from a defined reference point to the water surface in a suitable well, borehole, standpipe or tank. Depending on the selected instrument, a graduated tape or cable and probe establish depth to water at the time of observation. The result is a point reading, not a continuous record, unless logging is specifically supported.
Fixed equipment serves a different purpose. A staff gauge presents a graduated scale for reading a visible water surface at a fixed location. Available equipment varies by measuring length, metric graduations, probe arrangement, audible or visual contact signal, and scale format. These instruments complement our Distance Measurement / Monitoring equipment by supporting depth-to-water and visible level readings at suitable sites.
Depth-to-water information supports groundwater records, borehole assessment, well maintenance, construction dewatering, pumping-test support and selected environmental work. A portable water level meter reports the distance between its defined reference point and the water surface. The reference position matters because changing it can affect the numerical reading even when the surface has not moved.
Depth to water, total well or borehole depth, and water-column depth are separate measurements. The first ends at the water surface. Total depth extends to the bottom, while water-column depth is the vertical extent of water between the surface and bottom. A depth-to-water reading alone establishes neither of the other values.
Repeated observations can document static levels, changes over time and drawdown records where applicable. They may support selected Environmental Monitoring work by providing a consistent level reference for groundwater or surface water. The equipment records level only. It does not identify why a change occurred, predict later conditions or represent an entire groundwater area. Portable readings are not continuous unless suitable logging is supported.
Portable instruments normally use a marked tape or cable fitted with a probe. Where supported by the selected design and suitable liquid conditions, contact with the water surface activates an audible, visual or combined response. The term water level indicator describes this signal arrangement. Probe response may depend on electrical conductivity, so reliable response in every fluid should not be assumed.
The reported distance depends on the reference point, readable graduations, probe contact and available measuring length. Tape or cable condition, stretch, alignment, side contact and water movement can affect a reading. Probe size, borehole diameter, casing condition, obstructions, deposits, fouling and changes during measurement also matter. The instrument does not automatically locate the bottom or establish total depth, water-column depth, water quality, flow, pressure, stored volume or aquifer yield.
Portable tape-and-probe equipment suits selected wells, boreholes, standpipes, monitoring points and tanks. It can support groundwater records of static levels, changing levels and pumping-test drawdown where applicable, provided its measuring length, probe response and dimensions suit the access point. Each result applies to that measurement point and observation time.
For open water, a fixed water level gauge provides a visible scale at suitable rivers, ponds, canals, reservoirs, tanks or harbours. This staff gauge shows the surface relative to its installed scale and datum. It does not provide absolute elevation unless the datum is correctly related to a surveyed reference. It does not measure flow, explain changes or predict floods, tides or later levels.
Portable and fixed instruments provide different records. One measures vertical distance from a reference point to a contacted water surface. The other supports direct observation against an installed scale. Fixed readings can be affected by gauge alignment, installation, datum stability, scale damage, structural changes and the observer's position. Visibility, dirt, algae, deposits, waves, moving water and tidal movement may also influence readability.
Selection starts with the site, access arrangement, expected depth, borehole dimensions, required graduation and intended record. For portable equipment, assess measuring length, tape or cable construction, metric markings, graduation readability and probe diameter. Audible, visual or combined indication should suit expected water conditions, recognising that conductivity and fouling may influence response.
Reel size, brake or reel control, portability and carrying or storage arrangements affect practical suitability. The tape should remain readable and manageable across the required length, while the probe must suit the opening, casing and possible restrictions. No single instrument suits every location or liquid, so stated operating conditions and measurement limits should match the planned application.
For a fixed scale, consider scale length, graduation size, visibility from the observation point, mounting arrangement and exposure conditions. The required datum and stability of the supporting structure affect comparison between readings. Choose a format that remains legible under expected dirt, algae, weather, waves, flow conditions and tidal movement, with suitable access for observation and condition checks.
