Crack monitors and tell tales are practical tools for documenting visible crack width or relative movement during building checks, maintenance reviews, condition surveys and repeat inspections. A crack monitor installed across a suitable crack provides a reference for later readings. These observations create an organised record for the measured point, but do not diagnose the cause or establish structural safety.

Suitable equipment depends on the surface, crack position, expected movement direction, measurement method and whether the crack crosses a flat face or an internal or external angle. Why Use a Crack Monitor for Repeat Observations?

An installed unit establishes a visible reference across the crack, with its initial position forming the baseline for later comparison. Where the design supports the method, changes in alignment or scale position can show relative movement at that point. A baseline cannot show movement that occurred before installation.

A record identifies the installation location and date, initial reading, orientation and monitor type. Each return visit should add the date and observed position, plus any visible damage, looseness or disturbance.

One reading cannot establish a trend or confirm active or inactive cracking. Meaningful comparison requires an initial reading, recorded installation date and later readings from the same undisturbed unit or fixed-reference arrangement. Document any independent movement or damage before interpreting the readings.

What Is a Crack Monitor Used For?

On suitable walls, masonry, concrete and other compatible surfaces, a tell tale crack monitor can support scheduled observation at a defined location. Depending on its design, a crack monitoring gauge may indicate relative displacement. Visible-width measurement instead records the opening at a selected point rather than movement between installed references.

The readings can form part of maintenance files, inspection notes and condition-survey records. They cannot determine the cause, severity or structural significance of cracking, predict future movement, reveal concealed structural conditions or establish compliance with a building requirement. Structural stability and safety require assessment by a suitably qualified professional.

Material readings from timber, masonry or another material require separate Moisture Measurement equipment and do not explain why a crack formed. Moisture readings and crack observations measure different properties, so neither method replaces the other.

How Do Crack Width Gauges, Scales and Tell Tales Differ?

A crack width gauge or crack scale supports a visual width reading by comparing the opening with marked graduations at a selected point. An installed tell tale creates a fixed reference for later comparison. Scales, resolution and measurement ranges differ, so readings must follow the information for the selected equipment.

Straight monitors are intended for compatible flat surfaces. Corner monitors suit cracks crossing internal or external angles only where the stated installation arrangement matches the angle and substrate. Moiré tell tales may provide a visual pattern that assists relative-position reading, depending on their design. No unit should be assumed to measure every direction or crack depth.

Fixed crack discs can establish reference points on opposite sides of an opening. Suitable callipers may then be used with a compatible method, consistent contact positions and an agreed recording procedure. Disc spacing, measuring equipment and calculation methods are not universal, so each arrangement should follow its own product information.

Pocket microscopes can support close visual measurement where their scale and magnification suit the work. Illuminated crack-width scales may improve visibility where specified, but their stated method and range still apply. Concrete Covermeters serve a separate task when reinforcement position or concrete cover depth must be assessed and do not record visible crack movement.

How to Choose a Crack Monitor for Your Work

Begin with the surface type, crack position and whether installation is on a flat face or across a corner. Compare the expected movement direction with the design's stated functions. The required reading scale, measurement range and inspection objective determine whether the work needs width measurement, movement comparison or compatible fixed reference points.

Review the fixing method. Adhesives or sealants must be compatible with the selected unit and surface, and one material should not be assumed suitable for every substrate, exposure or working condition. Consider access, moisture, temperature, surface preparation and accidental disturbance, subject to the relevant product and installation information.

Plan how locations, dates, orientations, readings and photographs will remain organised across repeat visits.
