Surface Cleanliness

Surface cleanliness measurement assesses residues on steel and other compatible substrates before a protective coating is applied. Abrasive blasting or cleaning can leave dust, water-soluble salts, specific ions or amine blush. These contaminants differ, so the test method must correspond to the residue named in the coating specification.

Results describe conditions within a defined sample area before coating or overcoating. They do not clean the substrate, approve an application or predict coating life. Metal cleanliness testing is most useful when the sampling position, procedure and acceptance limit are established beforehand.

Why Does Surface Cleanliness Matter Before Coating?

Dust between a prepared substrate and a coating forms a barrier that may weaken surface contact. Water-soluble salts attract moisture, contributing to osmotic blistering, under-film corrosion or premature deterioration. Amine blush on cured epoxy presents a risk to adhesion between coats. Each condition requires assessment before coating or recoating.

A value or classification gives the project specification an objective point of comparison. A result above the stated limit prompts consideration of further preparation while the surface remains accessible. The reading represents only the sampled location, and acceptance depends on the specified method rather than a universal cleanliness value.

Surface contamination forms one part of Coatings Inspection. The condition of the abrasive and blasting process belongs within Abrasive & Blast Inspection, while visible defects and corrosion grades relate to Surface Condition. Prepared texture is assessed through Surface Profile, and Climate, Dewpoint & Relative Humidity measurements address atmospheric conditions around coating work. None of these checks substitutes for salt, dust or amine-blush testing.

Which Surface Contaminants Can Be Assessed?

Water-soluble contamination is assessed by extracting material from a known area and measuring the solution. In a Bresle procedure, an adhesive patch or cell contains extraction liquid against the substrate. The Elcometer 138 Bresle test kit combines compatible patches with a salt meter or conductivity meter, depending on the package. ISO 8502-6 covers extraction, while ISO 8502-9 addresses conductometric determination.

Conductivity reflects the sample’s ionic content. A compatible salt meter converts the reading into surface density under its supported mode, whereas a conductivity configuration reports conductivity for interpretation. Neither identifies individual salts. Where chloride, sulphate or nitrate must be assessed separately, the Elcometer 134 CSN uses dedicated tests for those ions.

The Elcometer 130 SSP uses wetted filter paper and multi-point conductivity sensors to display individual values and a salt-density profile. Its storage, USB, Bluetooth and reporting functions are specific to that salt contamination test kit.

Dust requires another method. The Elcometer 142 dust tape test kit uses pressure-sensitive tape to collect dust from cleaned steel for quantity and particle-size classification under ISO 8502-3. The Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller applies controlled force. Elcometer 139 swab and chip-screen tests indicate amine blush on compatible coating surfaces but do not quantify it.

Where Is Surface Cleanliness Testing Used?

Testing is relevant to structural steel, tanks, pipelines, bridges, marine assets, plant and fabricated components. Measurements take place after cleaning, blasting or washing, before coating, or before an additional coat where the procedure requires a contamination check.

Sampling often covers several positions because residue is rarely distributed evenly. Horizontal surfaces, sheltered areas, welds, edges and locations exposed to runoff often differ. Each measurement applies to its selected area, so test distribution influences how well the records describe the prepared surface.

Access and geometry affect the available method. Patches need suitable contact and sealing, dust tape requires consistent pressure, and amine-blush tests apply only to their intended coating condition. A result does not establish the cause of corrosion, identify every contaminant or replace project acceptance criteria.

What Influences Surface Cleanliness Results?

Sampling position, test-area size and surface shape affect the result. Soluble-salt readings also depend on the extraction liquid, recovered volume, contact time, temperature compensation and cleanliness of syringes, containers and sensors. Residue transferred from hands or tools may alter a low-level reading.

Dust classifications depend on tape condition, pressure, surface texture, background contrast and the stated reference images. Amine-blush tests rely on compatible samples, uncontaminated reagents and the comparison defined for the kit. Different methods report different quantities and are not interchangeable.

Patches, tape, filter papers, distilled water, swabs and reagents have specific storage and handling requirements. Calibration or verification status, batch identification, time, location and environmental conditions complete the record where required. Interpretation remains tied to the project procedure, applicable standard and coating manufacturer’s limits.
