An underground water leak detector is intended for suspected leakage from buried pressurised pipework, subject to access and transmission conditions. A ground microphone leak detector can receive sound through roads, floors or other suitable surfaces, but surface construction and ambient activity can limit what reaches the microphone. Suitable access remains necessary for either arrangement.
Performance varies with water pressure, leak size and shape, pipe diameter, wall thickness, burial depth, distance from the leak, soil and ground conditions, and the selected sensor. Pipe joints, valves, fittings and available access points also affect transmission. Metal pipes may carry sound differently from plastic pipes, but neither material guarantees a useful result.
