Detection varies with target material, size, orientation and burial depth, as well as soil composition, moisture, mineralisation, surface construction and nearby metal. A target can respond differently as its orientation, depth or surroundings change. The operator should assess repeatability from more than one direction and follow the operating instructions.
Metal-target detection differs from Cable & Pipe Location, which uses compatible signals, transmitters, clamps or sondes to trace a conductive route or inserted target. Metal detection does not trace an underground service route, identify non-metallic services or confirm that a cable is live. Neither method proves an area is clear or replaces service drawings and safe-digging procedures.
Smaller, deeper or poorly oriented targets may produce a weaker or less distinct response. Soil and ground conditions, surface reinforcement, electrical interference and adjacent metallic structures can alter the indication. Several nearby targets may create overlapping responses that are harder to isolate or interpret.
Search-coil height and position, sweep speed, settings and operator technique also influence results. The coil should be moved as instructed, with settings adjusted only where supported. Scanning along crossing lines can test whether an indicated point remains consistent, but it cannot establish exact depth or target identity.

Start with the expected target and stated detection capability. Compare target suitability, stated search-depth guidance, search area and access around obstacles. Ground composition, surface material, nearby structures and valve or box requirements should guide selection. Operators should read the instructions, confirm settings before scanning and recognise circumstances that may distort the response. Relevant site records, safe-working procedures and other location methods must remain part of the assessment wherever the work could affect concealed services or structures.
