Environmental monitoring equipment is used to measure conditions such as air quality, temperature, humidity, airflow, pressure, light, sound and radon across buildings, workplaces and outdoor environments. These measurements provide recorded values that can be compared between locations or monitored over time.

Celtic Surveys supplies environmental monitoring equipment for building inspection, construction, facilities management, ventilation work, storage areas and technical applications. The range includes handheld environmental meters for individual measurements as well as instruments with data-logging and monitoring functions, depending on the model.

Environmental Monitoring for Buildings and Site Work

Different environmental conditions require different instruments. A meter designed to measure airflow serves a different purpose from equipment used for temperature, humidity, sound or gas measurement.

The first step is therefore to identify the condition that needs to be measured and the environment in which the equipment will be used.

Environmental monitoring may involve spot readings during an inspection or repeated measurements collected over a longer period. The required measurement range, accuracy, sensor type, data logging and working conditions should all be considered when selecting equipment.

Air Quality and Gas Measurement

Air Quality equipment is used to assess selected indoor and environmental air conditions. Depending on the instrument, measurements may include carbon dioxide, temperature and other supported parameters.

For more specific gas measurement, Gas Analysers provide equipment for measuring gases within the ranges supported by each instrument.

Where airflow needs to be visualised rather than measured numerically, Smoke Pens can be used to show the direction of air movement around vents, openings and other areas.

Air and Wind Speed

Air & Wind Speed instruments include equipment for measuring air velocity in indoor, outdoor and ventilation applications.

Portable anemometers can be used for spot measurements, while other systems may support longer-term wind monitoring or additional weather-related readings.

The required instrument depends on whether the work involves ventilation, HVAC, outdoor wind conditions or repeated environmental monitoring.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature measurement can involve contact probes, air-temperature sensors or infrared instruments, depending on the surface or environment being checked.

Humidity equipment measures relative humidity and, depending on the model, may also provide temperature, dew point or other related readings.

Combined temperature and humidity meters can be particularly useful for building inspection, storage monitoring and facilities work where both conditions need to be recorded together.

For direct measurement of moisture within compatible building materials, browse our Moisture Meters instead.

Pressure and Airflow Measurement

Pressure instruments are available for applications involving differential, atmospheric and other supported pressure measurements.

These meters can be used in ventilation, HVAC, building-services and technical work where pressure differences need to be checked or recorded.

Some professional environmental meters combine pressure measurement with compatible airflow, temperature or humidity probes, allowing several conditions to be assessed with the same instrument platform.

Light and Sound Measurement

Environmental monitoring also includes conditions such as light and noise.

Our Solar & Light Measurement range includes instruments used to measure illuminance and related light conditions, depending on the equipment.

Sound Measurement equipment provides numerical sound-level readings for suitable workplace, building and environmental applications.

When selecting either type of instrument, check the measurement range and functions against the conditions that need to be assessed.

Radon Monitoring

Radon Measurement equipment is designed for monitoring radon levels over a period of time.

Because radon concentrations can vary, monitoring equipment can provide readings across a longer period rather than relying on a single measurement at one moment.

Available systems vary in display, logging and monitoring functions, so the intended location and recording requirements should be considered when choosing equipment.

Water Leak Detection

Where the task involves locating a possible water leak rather than measuring general environmental conditions, our Water Leak Detection equipment includes specialist systems for this type of work.

Different leak-detection methods are available depending on the application, pipework and access conditions.

Choosing Environmental Monitoring Equipment

Before choosing environmental monitoring equipment, consider:

  • What condition needs to be measured
  • Required measurement range
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Spot measurement or continuous monitoring
  • Data-logging requirements
  • Required sensors or probes
  • Display and recording functions
  • Environmental protection
  • Battery and power requirements
  • Calibration requirements

A simple handheld environmental meter may be sufficient for occasional spot checks, while regular monitoring may require data logging, remote sensors or a system capable of recording several environmental conditions.

The best option depends on the parameter being measured and how the information will be used.
